The collection consists of correspondence, newsclippings, press releases, course information and a few applications from interested individuals, legal documents concerning the fight over the establishement of the Institute in Carmel, Calif., speech by David Harris, articles and interviews concerning the Institute and founding members Joan Baez, David Harris, Holly Chenery, and Ira Sandperl. The correspondence consists chiefly of letters from citizens of Carmel and Monterey supporting the Institute. The collection also contains ten reel-to-reel audio tapes of hearings concerning the Institute and the Planning Commission of Monterrey County, California, 1965-1966. Of interest is a journal kept by Gretchen Foy, a student at the first session, July-August, 1965, giving a detailed account of discussions, and events and her reactions to them. Allen Ginsberg is mentioned. There is also a photograph of Holly Chenery with three [students?].
